CALCULATION OF THE DOSE OF OXYTOCIN IN MILLIUNITS.
1 ampule of oxytocin contain =1ml =5 units oxytocin.
Diluted it with 4ml of Ringer’s lactate to make it a total of 5ml.of Ringer’s lactate.
it means now 5ML Ringer’s lactate contains 5 units of oxytocin.
If we calculate in milliunits, then 1ml oxytocin has =1000 milliunits.
If we add 1ml of Ringer lactate, which contains 1 unit of oxytocin will be 1000 milliunits.( means if I have added 1 unit oxytocin, then I have added 1000 Milliunits of Oxytocin in 500 ml Ringer’s lactate.
means 500ml ringer lactate contain =1000 Milliunits oxytocin
Then 1ml Ringer’s lactate contain=1000/500=2 Milliunits oxytocin
If we are adding 1 unit of oxytocin in 500 ml Ringer’s lactate.
means 1unit =1000 milliunits.
You have added 1 unit of oxytocin to 500 mL of Ringer’s lactate.
Then 500 ml =1000 milliunits oxytocin
if 500 mL Ringer’s lactate contains 1000 milliunits oxytocin
then 1ml Ringer’s lactate contains 1000/500=2 milliunits oxytocin.
1 mL of Ringer’s lactate contains 2 milliunits of oxytocin.
If we are giving an infusion of 1ml of Ringer’s Lactate in 1 minute through a macro drip set, which drop factor is 16 drops /minute?
then (1ml contain 16 drops)=16 macro drops=2milliunits Oxytocin(Answer)
If we are giving 8 macro drops, then =1 milliunit Oxytocin (Answer)
If we give in a paediatric set, 1ml=60 micro drops =2 milliunits Oxytocin(Answer).
30 micro drop –1 milliunit oxytocin.(Answer)
If we are adding 2units of oxytocin.
Then, in macro drip set 16 drops per minute =you will get 4 milliunits of oxytocin, how? I am explaining
2 units of Oxytocin=500 ml Ringer’s lactate
1 unit=1000 Milliunits oxytocin
2 units=2000 Milliunits oxytocin
You have added 2 units of Oxytocin to 500 mL of Ringer’s lactate.
So 2000 Milliunits=500 mL Ringer’s lactate
500 mL = 2000 Milliunits oxytocin
1ml = 2000 ÷500 = 4 Milliunits oxytocin
If you are giving in Macro drops, which is (16 drops =1ml)and given to an adult, then you are giving in 1 minute.4 Milliunits of Oxytocin in infusion. ( With calculation of 16 drops of IV fluids in 1 minute)
If Doctor order to give 3 units of oxytocin in 500 ml Ringer lactate .then calculate drops per minute in macro drip set and microdroplet,
3 Units oxytocin = 500 ml Ringer lactate
1 Unit oxytocin =1000 milliunits
3units oxytocin =3000 milliunits
3000 milliunits =500 ml ringer lactate
1ml Ringer lactate = 3000 /500 = 6 Milliunits oxytocin
1ml Ringer lactate contain =6 milliunits
If you are infusing oxytocin in MACRODRIPSET , Then the drop factor is 16 drops in 1ml in 1 minute
we got 1ml Ringer lactate = 6 milliunit =16 macro drips =1 minute
If you will infuse 8 macro drips then you will infuse 3 milliunits =1 minute
